We use www.youtube.com/user/ILRIFILM to publish films and videos at ILRI. These videos have a creative commons license and are free for re-use with appropriate ILRI attribution. When uploading films to YouTube, it is important to follow the following steps.

Video preparation

The video to upload must be properly titled with a description that 'headlines' the video and gives viewers an idea of what the video is about.

Example:

CGIAR research on a major human health and nutrition problem (Heading: please do not capitalize all words in title)Interview with Delia Grace and John McDermott on aflatoxins, human health and nutrition (sub-heading of video)

Nairobi, 5 November 2013 (Date format)

The font used for slides in video can be either Gill Sans or Optima

  • Include captions for individuals interviewed or speaking in video
  • Have a closing credits slide that includes information on the video producer (individual or ILRI unit and month and year produced)

Example:Produced by Public Awareness

International Livestock Research Institute

November 2013

ILRI videos on YouTube are categorized in playlists that contain related videos on key ILRI topics, departments, countries, programs and regions.

Uploading process

  • Convert your videos to one of the following formats that YouTube supports: .MOV, .MPG4, .AVI, .WMW
  • Export your video in HD (high-definition) 720p or 1080p format from video editing program where possible. This assures good quality output in uploaded video.

To upload videos on YouTube, follow the steps below

  1. Sign in to ILRI YouTube
  2. Click the Upload link at the top of the page
  3. Select the video you'd like to upload from your computer.
  4. In privacy settings, select upload in 'private'. This allows the video to be reviewed before going public.
  5. Fill in the video title, description, tags and category settings.
  6. Maintain the three tags already listed: 'ilri, research, livestock' and use the ILRI master tags and categories.
  7. You can choose a thumbnail if the one automatically selected is not suitable.
  8. Select a playlist that you'd like to add the video to.
  9. Save and close.
